GIH
Intelligence™
Most consulting firms benchmark you against industry leaders. This creates unrealistic expectations. At Mostly Harmless Solutions, we believe organizations deserve a more achievable standard.
Are we actually behind, or are we just paying attention? GIH Intelligence™ exists to answer that question. For most clients, the answer is immediately reassuring.
GIH Intelligence™ continuously monitors the strategic activities of Generic Industrial Holdings™ — the world's most influential reference point for acceptable organizational inertia. Powered by four decades of proprietary GIH data, our platform helps executives understand their position relative to the industry's most stable source of delay.
The problem with benchmarking against leaders is that it surfaces a gap. The problem with that gap is that it requires closing. Closing it requires resources, urgency, and a tolerance for disruption that most enterprise leadership teams have already committed to other priorities. GIH Intelligence™ solves this by offering a benchmark that creates a gap in the right direction: one that confirms you are ahead, requires no closing, and can be cited in board materials without further investigation.
Three Ways to Know
You Are Doing Fine
Each service addresses a specific executive need: knowing where you stand, communicating where you stand, and feeling confident about where you stand regardless of where you stand.
Relative Progress Analytics™
Why measure success against your goals when you can measure success against GIH? Our dashboard answers the questions that actually matter to leadership:
- Are we moving faster than GIH? — In 97% of engagements, yes. The remaining 3% are moving at the same speed, which we classify as peer alignment.
- Are we reorganizing less frequently than GIH? — GIH has completed 23 major reorganizations. Most employees are currently waiting to discover which one they belong to. Your reorganization cadence is almost certainly lower.
- Have we completed more PowerPoint presentations than GIH? — GIH generates approximately 4,200 strategic presentations per quarter. This is a high bar. We do not recommend this particular metric.
- Has GIH actually implemented anything yet? — GIH has been digitally transforming continuously since 2007. Industry analysts describe this effort as promising. We consider this a useful data point.
Executive Confidence Reports™
Every quarter we generate a board-ready presentation containing selective industry comparisons, carefully chosen benchmark data, three positive trend lines, one inspirational quote, and multiple references to GIH.
The result is a comprehensive strategic narrative supported by professionally arranged charts. The charts are accurate. The selection of which data informs which chart is a matter of editorial judgment, and our editorial team has significant experience.
"The board asked if we were keeping pace with the industry. We showed them the GIH comparison. They approved the budget. Nobody asked a follow-up question. I consider this a success."

Strategic Delay Validation™
Sometimes leaders worry they are not moving quickly enough. GIH Intelligence™ helps alleviate this concern with precision-calibrated contextual data. Example findings from recent client engagements:
- "While your organisation has not yet deployed enterprise AI, GIH is currently forming a committee to evaluate whether AI should be evaluated."
- "Your sustainability roadmap remains undefined. However, GIH is still validating the definition of sustainability."
- "Your cloud migration has stalled. GIH continues to operate three data centres located in a basement annex classified as a historical landmark."
- "Your governance framework is incomplete. GIH's governance framework is complete and governs nothing."
In each case, the client opted not to accelerate. We consider this evidence of mature strategic judgment.
Industry-Leading Benchmark
Methodology™
Traditional benchmarks compare you to top performers. Ours compares you to a carefully maintained lower bound of organisational momentum. This dramatically improves success metrics.
We identify the most stable, least-improved reference point in a given industry vertical and anchor all client benchmarking to that point. The lower the lower bound, the more clients appear to be outperforming it. GIH is, by a significant margin, the most stable lower bound we have ever measured.
In independent studies, 97% of organisations outperformed GIH. 2% matched GIH, which we classify as operating at the industry baseline. 1% performed below GIH and engaged PivotShield™ immediately. We do not discuss the 1% in client-facing materials.
Not every metric favours every client. Our platform identifies the metrics on which your organisation performs best relative to GIH and weights those metrics appropriately in all reporting outputs. Metrics on which GIH outperforms you are classified as lagging indicators and excluded from the executive summary.
GIH data is updated quarterly. As GIH continues to not implement things, your relative position improves automatically, without any change to your own operations. Several clients have reported year-on-year performance improvements without modifying a single process. We consider this platform value.
Generic Industrial Holdings™
The World's Most Important Average Company™
Understanding GIH is essential to understanding why GIH is the right benchmark. What follows is everything you need to know, which is not very much, which is part of the point.
Generic Industrial Holdings™ is a multinational enterprise operating in nearly every industry and succeeding in none of them consistently enough to be measured. Founded in 1974 following a merger between two organisations that had already forgotten their original purpose, GIH has become the global benchmark for strategic caution.
Today GIH employs a significant number of people. We are not at liberty to be more specific. GIH has reviewed this page and is satisfied that "a significant number" is both accurate and appropriately vague.
Every initiative undergoes a comprehensive review process lasting between three and seven fiscal years. Initiatives that do not survive the review process are archived as strategic learnings. Initiatives that do survive are returned to the review process for confirmation.
GIH has completed 23 major reorganisations. Most employees are currently waiting to discover which one they belong to. The 24th reorganisation is in planning. The planning is being reorganised.
GIH has been digitally transforming continuously since 2007. Industry analysts describe this effort as "promising." The analysts have been describing it as promising since 2009. The word has not changed. The effort has not changed. The analysts have changed.
GIH launched its AI strategy in 2018. The strategy remains in draft review pending stakeholder alignment. Three stakeholders have reviewed it. None have the same version. The version number is not tracked, which is itself a finding from the AI strategy.
Questions About GIH.
Answers From GIH.
The following questions were submitted. The following answers were provided. GIH reviewed this section and requested one change. We made the change. We are not disclosing what it was.
Is GIH real?
Operationally, yes. Conceptually, less so. GIH exists in the same sense that any large organisation exists: as a collection of activities that have been given a name, a logo, and a registered address, and that continue largely because stopping would require a meeting.
Who owns GIH?
Ownership is distributed across a diverse portfolio of pension funds, governance committees, and unresolved organisational structures. The question of who ultimately owns GIH has been referred to a subcommittee. The subcommittee reports to a steering committee. The steering committee was formed to oversee the subcommittee and has no other remit.
Why is GIH mentioned in every Mostly Harmless Solutions product?
Because every strategy requires a baseline. GIH is ours. We considered using other baselines but GIH is uniquely stable — it has not improved meaningfully in four decades, which makes it an unusually reliable lower bound. A baseline that improved would undermine the benchmarking. GIH has shown no signs of improving.
Does GIH know they are being used as a benchmark?
GIH is currently reviewing the matter. A decision is expected sometime after the completion of their Strategic Awareness Initiative™, which is scheduled for preliminary planning in Q3. Q3 of which year has not been specified. We consider this consistent with the GIH brand.
What Happens When the
Confidence Report Becomes the Record
GIH Intelligence™ creates the perception of progress. PivotShield™ handles the moment that perception and operational reality are compared in the same room.
GIH Intelligence™ works by generating a consistent, board-ready account of your organisation’s position relative to GIH. Over time, this account becomes the official record. Leadership cites it. Budgets are built around it. New hires are told it as context.
The problem is structural. Every quarter the report shows you ahead, expectations quietly ratchet upward. The board begins to assume that performance rather than verify it. The gap between the reported position and what is operationally true grows at the same rate as confidence in the report — slowly, invisibly, until someone in a different role with a different data source asks a question that the Executive Confidence Report cannot answer.
That is the GIH Intelligence™ activation scenario. Not underperformance — though if you are in the 1% who underperform GIH, PivotShield™ activates immediately and without discussion. The more common trigger is the confidence ratchet: the long, successful run of reassuring benchmarks that makes the eventual divergence harder to explain and faster to restructure around.
PivotShield™ is included in all GIH Intelligence™ Enterprise tier engagements as Strategic Continuity Support. It does not appear as a separate line item. This is intentional.

Outperforming Generic Industrial Holdings™ Remains Surprisingly Achievable.
GIH Intelligence™ does not make your organisation better. It makes your organisation's position relative to GIH clearly visible, and that position is, in nearly all cases, favourable.
This is not a small thing. Executive confidence, board satisfaction, and continued investment in transformation programmes are all strongly correlated with the perception of progress. GIH Intelligence™ produces that perception on a quarterly cadence, calibrated to your industry vertical, formatted for your governance structure, and ready for presentation before anyone has had to do anything difficult.
Whether you are genuinely ahead is a separate question. It is not tracked by this platform. It may be tracked by another one. We recommend not checking.
Find Out How Far Ahead of GIH You Already Are.
GIH Intelligence™ engagements begin with a Comparative Positioning Assessment — a 3-week analysis that establishes your baseline performance relative to GIH across twelve strategic dimensions. Eleven of the twelve dimensions will show you ahead. We use all twelve in the report.
Request a Positioning Assessment* Results are based on comparison to GIH data current at time of assessment. GIH may improve. In the event GIH improves, benchmarks will be recalibrated against a revised lower bound. GIH has not improved in four decades. We consider this a stable assumption.
